The reason why the service is not available in Korea

Apple Pay is expected to start service in Korea soon. It is estimated that more than half of foreign residents living in Korea use Apple smartphones, so I think they will be very interested ^^

Since Apple Pay was first released in 2014, the service has started worldwide except for Korea. However, it was not introduced in Korea due to problems such as payment method.

Apple Pay adopted the method of scanning a transportation card (NFC), because in Korea, most card payment terminals use the method of swiping a credit card (MTS). The service was not available because this payment method did not match.

When Apple Pay is introduced in Korea

Of the total 3 million credit card merchants in Korea, only 60,000 to 70,000 places have NFC-type devices installed. For this reason, even if Apple Pay is introduced within this year, there are not many domestic uses

It is limited to hypermarkets such as E-Mart and Costco, franchise cafes such as Starbucks and Holly's Coffee, and franchise convenience stores such as CU and GS25. However, I think this would be good for those who use Apple Pay

It is said that you have to pay about 150,000 won to purchase an NFC-type terminal that supports Apple Pay at a general merchant. So, usage won't increase anytime soon.

On the other hand, Samsung Electronics' simple payment service 'Samsung Pay' uses both MTS and NFC.

Do I have to pay a fee for using Apple Pay?

Korea In terms of simple payment services in Korea, Samsung Pay dominates the market with an 80% market share

However, as domestic iPhone users have been waiting for the introduction of easy payment for a long time, it is expected that the market will fluctuate once Apple Pay's domestic service starts

This means that those who used Samsung mobile phones to use Samsung Pay may also switch to iPhones.

But Apple Pay also has its downsides. In the case of Samsung Pay and Kakao Pay, they do not charge a fee for offline payments, but Apple Pay sets the card company fee at 0.15% for payment, and there are many complaints abroad.

This fee is not borne by the customer, but if the card company pays for it, the cost will eventually return to the consumer, so you can't help but worry.

Either way, all services will evolve in a way that promotes user convenience, so let's wait and see.
