On the afternoon of the 10th, a press conference was held at Hwaseong Haenggung Plaza in Suwon, to declare support for the migrant women candidates running from the Democratic Party of Korea for the 8th national local election to be held on June 1st.

On this day, organizations such as Korea Immigrant Women Voters Federation (Chairman Lee Kyung-sook) and Jeong Man Cheon Ha-Migrant Women’s Association (co-representative Ahn Ki-hee) with 400,000 members in 8 branches nationwide, which has the largest member of southern Gyeonggi Province. Wang G-na, a candidate in the provisional constituency for the Suwon City Council election (Yeonghwa, Yeonmu, and Jowon 1-dong), and Choi Mi-ja, a candidate for proportional representation in the Boryeong City Council election were also in attendance.

Candidate Wang Gna, who made her first remarks, said, “A society that recognizes and respects diversity is a true community in the global era. In the meantime, we have shouted multiculturalism and talked about diversity in every election, but we have not had any independence. Because of this, the stories of immigrants were not properly reflected in the policy.”

Candidate Wang also said, “Now is the time for immigrants to have an independent mind and show them in action. In the 30-year history of immigrants who came to Korea, there were immigrants who played politics in the central and local areas as proportional representatives, but there were no elected positions. Just as seawater maintains its salty taste with 3% salt, I will challenge myself for an elected office and win without fail.”

Candidate Wang finally pledged, “I will be a driving force in promoting multicultural policies that include a value of philosophy of respect for diversity and coexistence.”

Choi Mi-ja, president of the Boryeong branch of the Chungnam Multicultural Families Association, who made the second remark, said, “It has been 20 years since I came to Korea, but there are still many migrants living in the yoke of discrimination and hatred around us. “I decided to challenge the proportional representative of Boryeong City in order to help indigenous peoples and immigrants live as equal members and to implement solutions that we felt through our experiences in the past.”

Chairman Lee Kyung-sook, who made the last declaration of support, said, “Korea has now become a multicultural society inseparable, but overlapping and formal multicultural policies and budgets are overflowing and they are not being consistently pursued. I hope that more of our immigrants will go out into the political arena that can change our lives.”

Chairman Lee also said, “When there are many immigrant candidates, multicultural families and migrants will be more interested in elections and politics. Through this, children of multicultural families can live in a better world. We ask for your interest and support for the immigrant female candidates.”

In Korea, only in local elections, foreigners acquire permanent residency and have the right to vote after three years.
