There are various types of foreigners residing in Korea, including foreign workers, marriage immigrants, Chinese Koreans, and international students. That number is also increasing.
On August 4, the National Statistical Office announced the results of the 2022 Population and Housing Census. Let's check how the statistics of foreign residents and multicultural families living in Korea are changing.
How many foreigners live in Korea?
*The number of foreign residents has increased a lot~ : As of November 2022, out of the total population of 51.69 million in Korea, about 1.75 million foreigners have lived for more than 3 months, accounting for 3.4% of the total population in Korea.
This is a 6.2% increase over the previous year. However, compared to 2019, when foreigners were the most, it decreased by 1.5%. It looks like this year will far exceed 2019!
*Which country has the most people? : Looking at foreigners by nationality, Chinese (Korean) accounted for the most with 30.1%, followed by Vietnamese with 11.9%, Chinese with 11.7%, and Thai with 9.3%.
Countries where the number of foreigners increased significantly compared to the previous year were China (11,000, 5.7%), Vietnam (9,000, 4.5%), and Uzbekistan (9,000, 4.5%).
Foreigners also live in places where it is easy to get a job.
*Do many foreigners live in the metropolitan area? : 61.2% (1,072,000 people) of all foreigners in Korea live in the metropolitan area (Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon). I think it is because there are many jobs in the metropolitan area and it is convenient to live.
By city, county and district, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do had the largest number of foreigners with 86,000 (4.9%), Hwaseong and Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do each had 57,000 (3.2%), and Suwon-si had 56,000 (3.2%). followed.
*Local governments with a high percentage of foreigners : There were a total of 9 cities, counties and districts with more than 10% of foreigners in the total population.
Among them, the region with the highest proportion of foreigners was Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do (13.9%). Next, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do (12.1%), Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do (11.8%), and Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do (10.7%) had the highest proportion of foreigners. It must be really easy to meet foreign residents on the streets in this area.
The number of naturalized and married immigrants also increased by 3.7%
*Are there more naturalized citizens than marriage immigrants? : As the number of foreigners residing in Korea increases, the number of naturalized (Koreans) and marriage immigrants is also continuously increasing.
In 2022, there are 171,098 naturalized households in Korea. There are 148,421 marriage migrant households. There are more naturalized households than married immigrant households.
The number of naturalized households increased by 8,042 from the previous year, and the number of married immigrant households increased by 2,403 from the previous year.
*Korea has entered a multicultural society : Chinese (Korean) accounted for the largest portion at 32.3% when looking at the nationalities of naturalized and married immigrants combined. Next came Vietnam (21.8%), China (19.0%), the Philippines (5.4%), and Japan (3.6%).
The country with the largest year-on-year increase was the United States (15.7%), followed by Canada (14.6%) and Taiwan (11.1%).
As the Korean government has recently shown a forward-looking attitude toward issuing work visas and changing long-term stay visas, the number of foreigners and naturalized people entering the country is expected to continue to increase in the future.
