The 20th Ansan International Street Theater Festival, the largest ever held... 97 works and programs from 6 countries around the world

Post content

Ansan City will host the 20th Ansan International Street Festival from May 4th to 6th. At this event, 97 works and programs from 6 countries will be held around Ansan Culture Square and the central square of Ansan Lake Park. We looked at the various programs of the Ansan International Street Theater Festival, which even foreign residents must visit at least once.

The largest opening and closing festival of all time

The opening work that will kick off the festival is ‘Welcome (A Day at the Festival)’ by the French modern dance troupe ‘Company Diptyque’. ‘Welcome (A Day at the Festival)’ plans to create a three-dimensional space so that many citizens can enjoy it together, making Ansan Culture Square, where the festival is held, an unrealistic and magical space.

The festival ends with the ‘Fire Festival’ by ‘Les Commando Perquis’, a representative French performing arts group. The closing work ‘Festival of Fire’ is a work that presents a new experience to the audience by using fireworks as the center of music and rhythm. Going beyond the well-known fireworks and concerts, we plan to give citizens unforgettable memories and make them look forward to next year's festival.

4 keyword performance programs

The performance program was prepared around four keywords, including ‘#plaza’, ‘#city’, ‘#forest’, and ‘#crossing’, to reflect the interests and tastes of various audiences and to become a ‘festival for everyone’.

‘#Plaza’ prepared a performance to open the hearts of citizens who visited the festival, welcoming each other and breathing together. Overseas performances include 'Minimal Lies' by the French acrobatic troupe 'Alta Gamma', which involves throwing off the shell surrounding oneself and facing one's minimal self, and 'Chameleon', a British modern dance duo where two people build a relationship by pushing and pulling each other. ‘Push’ visits the street theater festival. Korean performances feature works that span generations, such as ‘traditional entertainment’ and ‘traditional circus’ that foreigners should also pay attention to. Citizens of various ages and cultures, such as the Korean traditional tightrope walking 'Panjul', the creative performance 'Yeonhui Taeng Show' by 'the entertainment group THE Clown', and the 'Rotary Project' by the marching band 'Cheongak' that combines Korean traditional instruments with Western wind instruments. We have prepared a work that we can sympathize with and laugh about together.

‘#City’ featured several performances that focused on the hidden power of Ansan, and ‘#Forest’ dealt with the coexistence of humans and non-humans and consisted of works that looked back on our lives in the era of climate crisis.

‘#Crossing’ was prepared with works that break down barriers by facing and understanding each other. ‘#Crossing’ is mainly a mobile performance that can be viewed while walking.

A special program with special features

Ansan International Street Theater Festival expands the place and spatiality of the festival and creates spaces such as ‘Street Art × Children’ and ‘Street Art × Youth’ for children and youth.

‘Street Art × Children’ is a space for children created in Ansan Culture Square’s Water Plaza. An urban playground where the city can be used in a unique way and a water pool reminiscent of a huge lake are created and operated as a YES Kids Zone where children can play freely. Six programs meet children.

‘Street Art × Youth’ is a space where youth express their individuality and voluntarily create their own culture through solidarity that embraces each other’s diversity. Although it is a space for teenagers, it is planned to encompass all generations who are interested in youth culture. There are also ‘Public Karaoke’, ‘Park Dance’, and ‘How To Be’ where youth and citizens can participate as subjects. Foreign residents should also participate.
