The Korean government has decided to provide full college tuition support to all children of low-income recipients of basic livelihood security and the next-lowest income class starting in 2024. The unit price for national scholarships was also increased by 300,000 to 500,000 won.
The Ministry of Education and the Korea Scholarship Foundation announced that they will be accepting applications for national scholarships for the first semester of the 2024 school year from November 22nd to December 27th.
The national scholarship is an income-related scholarship provided by the government to college students whose income and assets are below a certain level and who meet academic performance criteria.
The tuition support range is determined based on the recognized income calculated from the income, assets, and debt of the student and his or her parents or spouse. Please check the chart for more details.
In particular, the Korean government has decided to expand national scholarship benefits starting next year and provide full tuition support to all children who are recipients of basic livelihood security or from the lowest income class.
Until this year, we provided 7 million won for the first child and full tuition for the second and younger children, but starting next year, we have decided to provide full tuition for all children. The unit price for National Scholarship Type Ⅰ for tuition support categories 1 to 3 is 5.7 million won per year, an increase of 9.6% (500,000 won) from this year, and for sections 4 to 6, it is 4.2 million won per year, an increase of 7.7% (300,000 won).
Those eligible to apply are all college students, including current students, new students, transfer students, readmitted students, and returning students. Current students must apply within the relevant period, and students who have not applied can apply for relief only twice during their time in school.
To receive a national scholarship, you must complete at least 12 credits in the previous semester and receive a grade of B or higher. Anyone with a grade of C or higher can apply for the basic and second level classes. Additionally, students in sections 1 to 3 can apply up to twice during their school year, even if they receive a C grade. Applications for national scholarships can be made 24 hours a day through the Korea Scholarship Foundation website or mobile application (app).
Applicants for national scholarships must agree to provide household member information and submit the necessary documents by 6 p.m. on January 3 of next year. Application results can be checked on the foundation’s website. You can receive customized counseling by phone or at each regional center of the foundation.
