Currently, if there are no foreigners in Korea, there is a high possibility that factories will close and the local economy will fall into a big crisis. This means that the share of foreign workers in the Korean economy has increased.

On the other hand, the perception of Koreans toward foreign workers has not been good. However, a recent survey on the public perception of the influx of immigrants in Korea, commissioned by the Maeil Economy, an economic newspaper, commissioned by a polling company Mono Research, yielded slightly different results.

According to this survey, Koreans responded 'generally positive' (34.4%) or 'very positive' (5.2%) to the influx of immigrants, which was more than 'mostly negative' (13.7%) or 'very negative' (4.3%).

In particular, in a survey on changes in perception of immigrants over the past five years, the response of 'changing positively' (40.0%) was nearly twice as high as that of 'changing negatively' (22.7%), indicating that awareness of immigrants is improving along with the increase in immigrants.

Also, when asked about the economic and social impact of the influx of immigrants into Korea, 49.9% of respondents answered ‘positively’. The response of 'negative' was 32.5%.

In particular, there were many positive responses in Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk (63.9%) and Gangwon and Jeju (61.5%), where the local economy is highly dependent on foreigners because there are many rural areas.

By age group, there were fewer positive responses from those in their 20s (37.4%) and those in their 30s (39.2%), which seems to reflect concerns about job conflicts

Respondents who viewed the influx of immigrants positively cited “resolving a shortage of manpower due to low birth rates and aging” (62.8%) as their number one reason.

As the second priority, many respondents chose “enhancing national competitiveness through securing economic, social, and cultural diversity” (30.1%). When asked about the extent to which immigrant workers contribute to business activities, 71.2% of respondents answered positively, such as ‘mostly contributing’ (61.3%) and ‘very contributing’ (9.9%).

According to the analysis of the Korea Economic Research Institute, the economic effect brought by 877,000 foreign workers has already reached 175.3 trillion won last year alone.

We hope that the awareness of foreigners towards foreigners will continue to improve, and through this, the living environment of foreigners in Korea will become even better. Currently, about 2.3 million foreigners live in Korea.

This survey was conducted by Mono Research on 1,000 men and women over the age of 18 nationwide for 7 days from April 13 to 19. At the 95% confidence level, the sampling error is ±3.09% points.
