Ministry of Justice, 3 million foreign residents era! New immigration and immigration policy announcement ②

Post content

The Ministry of Justice (Minister Park Sung-jae) announced on September 26 a new paradigm of ‘New Immigration and Immigration Policy Promotion Plan’ to prepare for the era of 3 million foreign residents. Papaya Story also reported the main contents on September 28. Today, we will supplement the important contents that were not covered then.

Strengthening support for employment and settlement of international students

The Ministry of Justice has decided to extend the job search period for international students graduating from Korean universities from the current two years to a maximum of three years, so that they can take their time to find a job. In addition, the scope of employment for international students, which was previously limited to certain professional occupations, has been expanded to include non-professional fields such as manufacturing, where there is a serious shortage of workers.

The benefits of permanent residency and citizenship, which were previously only granted to international students in the science and technology field who graduated from five specialized universities, including KAIST, have been decided to be extended to international students from other excellent domestic universities.

Support for second-generation immigrants to remain and become self-reliant

Foreign youth, including second-generation immigrants, have been unable to get jobs unless they go on to college after graduating from high school. The Ministry of Justice has decided to allow visa conversion so that youth with immigrant backgrounds can get jobs right away without going to college.

Through this, we decided to improve the system so that immigrant youth who attended school in Korea can continue to reside in Korea with their families without leaving the country. In particular, we decided to work with relevant ministries to find practical measures to help immigrant youth with their studies, employment, independence, and settlement.

Eliminate discrimination in visa applications for compatriots

Currently, the visa application requirements for Koreans living abroad (F-4) are different depending on their nationality. There are concerns that this is discriminating against Koreans.

The Ministry of Justice has decided to gradually integrate the visas for overseas Koreans, which are currently divided into the H-2 visa for working visitors and F-4 visas for overseas Koreans, in order to eliminate discrimination based on nationality, and to expand the scope of possible employment.

A Ministry of Justice official said, “We will attract foreigners who are needed by Korean society and create a structure in which immigrants can become self-reliant members of the community and contribute to Korean society.”
