The Korean government has completely changed its strategy to attract foreign students. In the past, we focused on managing incoming international students, but from now on, we decided to make active efforts with local governments to attract overseas students to Korea.
Through this, it was decided to increase the number of foreign students from about 167,000 as of last year to 300,000 by 2027.
Why are they doing this all of a sudden?
*Population Cliff Crisis: In Korea, many universities are in danger of closing as the number of students going to school continues to decrease due to population decline. Not only is the number of students decreasing, but also the population of the provinces is decreasing, so the government has decided to hand over the initiative in attracting international students to local governments.
*Contributing to Korea's development: If we secure talented people, these talented people will eventually contribute to the development of the Korean economy
In addition, the government decided to provide full support because the expenses such as tuition fees incurred by international students in Korea are not insignificant.

Admission to Korean universities becomes easier
*Admission is easy and graduation is as it is now: In the past, to enter a Korean university, you had to have a level 3 or higher in the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) or level 2 and complete intensive Korean language education, but we have decided to lower this standard in the future.
It was also decided to lower the financial capacity from 20,000 dollars in the metropolitan area and 18,000 dollars in the provinces to 20 million won in the metropolitan area and 16 million won in the provinces. However, we decided to keep the graduation requirement of TOPIK level 4.
*Foreign workers can also enter Korean universities: Foreign workers with E-9 and E-10 visas, who were previously unable to enter Korean universities, can enter Korean universities from next year and combine work and study.
*Expansion of English lectures: We decided to increase the number of universities that offer English lectures by more than 50% and establish a new R&D project that international students can participate in. All of this study-abroad-related information will be provided through the ‘Comprehensive Study Abroad System in Korea’ of the National Institute for International Education.
Did they make it easy for you to get a job and a part-time job?
*Increases part-time job hours: The most important thing for international students to maintain their studies in Korea is part-time job and employment?
It was decided to increase the field practice time (part-time job) for international students from a maximum of 25 hours to 40 hours during the week, and to change the job training (internship), which was only possible in connection with the major during the semester, to be possible in fields other than the major during vacation.
*Support for settlement in Korea after graduation: In the past, the Korean government was busy sending international students out of the country after graduating from college.
However, in the future, we decided to strengthen matching between companies and international students so that they can get a job in Korea after graduation and settle down in the local community. In particular, if the international student majored in ‘science and engineering’, we decided to actively support permanent residency and naturalization.
