The Korean Ministry of Justice announced that it will be piloting a ‘digital nomad (workplace)’ visa starting January 1, which will allow overseas remote workers to work while enjoying sightseeing in Korea.

Workcation is a compound word of work and vacation, and refers to a form of working remotely while resting at a vacation or tourist destination. Currently, work visas are being introduced and operated mainly in tourist countries such as Europe, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia.

Families are allowed, but application requirements are strict.

Until now, in order for foreigners to work in Korea, they had no choice but to obtain a tourist visa or enter the country without a visa and stay for less than 90 days. After the stay period, even if they wanted to stay in Korea longer, they had to leave the country. In order to resolve the inconvenience of overseas remote workers, the Ministry of Justice has established a digital nomad (workplace) visa system that allows workers belonging to foreign companies to stay in the country for a long period of time while sightseeing if they prove their employment experience and income above a certain level.

You can apply for a digital nomad (workplace) visa at a Korean embassy overseas, and accompanying family members can also apply for a visa.

Foreigners who are currently working in Korea with a short-term stay status can change to a work visa in Korea if their work experience and income are met.

However, the application requirements are very strict. Your income must be more than KRW 84.96 million per year, which is more than twice the gross national income (GNI) per capita of the previous year, and you must subscribe to personal health insurance worth KRW 100 million or more.

Digital nomad (work) visa holders are strictly restricted from employment in Korea to protect the domestic employment market. In order to work in Korea, you must obtain a separate work visa.

The Ministry of Justice said, “The introduction of this digital nomad (work) visa is expected to be an opportunity for high-income foreigners to stay in various regions of the country, revitalizing the local economy and promoting our country’s scenery and culture.” He said, “We will continue to actively discover and promote visa policies that can contribute to the national economy.”

We wonder how many foreigners will enter the country with a work visa.
