Preparing for the creation of a foreign community...Leading into the center of Korea through exemplary immigration policies

Post content

In the era of local extinction due to population decline, Gyeongsangbuk-do is trying to find new vitality by attracting foreign residents.

In particular, Gyeongsangbuk-do judged that now is the golden time for provincial-led foreigner policy promotion, and on January 1 of this year, a foreigner community division was newly established and a foreigner community TF team was formed.

Through this, Gyeongsangbuk-do is promoting the following foreigner policies to create an exemplary foreigner community and create an environment where foreigners coexist and develop. There are not a few policies that foreign residents pay attention to.

First, Gyeongbuk Province established the Gyeongbuk Visa Center to establish an efficient support system from entry to permanent residency and naturalization of foreigners to attract foreigners.

Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to promote the operation and publicity of the ‘region-specific visa business’ through this center, and to connect companies to jobs and strengthen business capabilities for foreigners who have settled in the region.

Second, to support foreign settlement, Gyeongbuk-do promotes regionally-specific visa foreigner settlement support, regionally-specific foreigner-specialized Hope Joint project, and Goryeoin resident settlement-specialized project.

The Settlement Housing Support Project is a policy to support housing expenses of 200,000 won per person for 6 months for initial settlement support for foreigners in 5 cities and counties participating in the regionally specialized visa pilot project. It can't be a very surprising and unconventional support plan.

The Hope Joint project is a project that supports foreigners to stand tall as members of society by implementing the assignment of manpower in charge of foreign affairs, interpretation and translation services, case management of foreigners and education related to the settlement of foreigners.

The Goryeoin Resident Settlement Specialized Project is a policy that provides Korean language education tailored to each generation and level, operates after-school care classes for Goryeoin elementary school children, and furthermore supports adaptation and settlement to the local community through cultural and sports events.

Third, Gyeongsangbuk-do promotes the local community adaptation specialization project for foreign residents residential area infrastructure creation project World Citizens’ Day One Mind Congratulation Project for social integration of foreigners.

Regionally specialized visa business

Gyeongsangbuk-do has been promoting foreign policy in earnest since it was selected as the Ministry of Justice’s ‘Region-specific Visa Pilot Project’ in September of last year.

Through the region-specific visa project, 290 foreign skilled workers or outstanding international students can be issued residence visas (F-2), right below permanent residency, on the recommendation of the provincial governor.

Foreign talents residing and working in depopulated areas can now receive residence visas that take more than 10 years, and can resolve the inconvenience of having to leave Korea due to visa issues. We’re looking forward to seeing if Gyeongsangbuk-do's foreigner policy will overcome local extinction and inject new vitality into the region.
