The Ministry of Justice has decided to charge a portion of the educational costs of the ‘Social Integration Program’, which is currently free, from January 1 of next year. Looking at the specific education expenses, steps 1 to 4 of the 0 to 5 steps of the social integration program receive 100,000 won for each step (100 hours), and for step 5, the basic course (for permanent residence, 70 hours) is 70,000 won and the advanced course (for naturalization) is 100,000 won. , 30 hours) was decided to receive 30,000 won. Level 0 (15 hours) is free.

Since 2009, the Ministry of Justice has been operating a ‘Social Integration Program’ entirely funded by the government to help immigrants adapt to our society and become self-reliant.

Until now, education was provided free of charge, but there were side effects, such as lowering the participants' motivation to learn and lowering their academic achievement, so the 'beneficiary pays principle' was applied to require participants to pay for the education.

In particular, the education target participating in the social integration program is diversifying to compatriots, employed people, and international students, and the demand for education is increasing, but there is also the problem of not being able to properly open courses due to insufficient government finances.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Justice decided to charge a fee for some of the social integration programs in order to strengthen immigrants' sense of responsibility and self-reliance in participating in social integration education and to change the negative perception in some quarters that immigrants are targets of one-sided support.

However, it was decided to reduce education costs for socially disadvantaged people so that they are not excluded from social integration programs.

The socially underprivileged announced by the Ministry of Justice include national contributors such as those of national merit, basic livelihood recipients, severely disabled, minor children of immigrated immigrants, minor foreign children of citizens, and multiple G-1 visa holders. These people are fully exempted from education expenses.

Diligent participants can receive a 50% discount on training fees. These are immigrants who attended 100% of the training at the social integration program stage and were recommended by the instructor as having an excellent learning attitude.

An official from the Ministry of Justice said, “We will continue to improve the social integration educational environment necessary for immigrants to adapt to Korean society and become self-reliant, while creating a social environment where citizens and foreigners can respect and understand each other and coexist and advance together for the development of the Republic of Korea.”
