The Ministry of Justice will carry out the ‘3rd joint government crackdown on illegal aliens’ starting on October 10th in parallel with the ‘Special Self-Advance System for Illegal Foreigners’ currently in effect.
This crackdown, which will be carried out for two months until December 9, is jointly carried out by the Ministry of Justice, National Police Agency, Ministry of Employment and Labor, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and Korea Coast Guard.
Key crackdown areas include industries that encroach on jobs for Koreans such as the tourism and lodging industry, courier services, and construction, companies that employ a large number of illegal foreigners and habitual employers, foreigners working in entertainment establishments, illegal entry and employment brokers, and illegal foreigners related to foreign crimes.
This joint crackdown was designed to ensure that legal foreign manpower systems, such as expansion of skilled workers and seasonal work, are smoothly established by taking strict action against violations of residence order.
The Korean government cracked down on 20,427 people in the first crackdown and 6,114 in the second crackdown. Although it is a huge scale, it appears that the third crackdown will be carried out on a very large scale as the performance in the second crackdown was poor.
They plan to take maximum measures against illegal aliens caught during this joint crackdown period, including imposing fines, forcible deportation, and entry ban. On the other hand, illegal foreigners who voluntarily leave the country using the currently operating special voluntary departure system are exempt from fines and entry restrictions.
Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon said, “The Korean government’s basic policy is to flexibly expand legal stay and strictly crack down on illegal stay, and we will continue to do our best to establish order of stay.”
