Hanshin University, a private university in Korea, forced 22 international students from Uzbekistan who were studying at the school's language school to leave the country. They were issued D-4 (general training) visas and entered the country on September 27th, and were able to stay in the country for three months until the end of December, but were unfairly kicked out. What happened to the international students that day?

International student suddenly leaves without even being able to pack his/her dormitory luggage

*What happened? : On November 27, 22 Uzbek students attending Hanshin University’s language school were asked to board a bus by the university, saying, ‘We must visit the immigration office.’ However, this bus stopped at Byeongjeom Station in Hwaseong City, picked up security company employees, and headed to Incheon International Airport, not the immigration office.

*You used coercive methods? : Only then did the faculty members who were with them say, “If you go to the immigration office, you will be locked up in jail. “International students have to return home because they do not meet the conditions of stay,”. The university even confiscated students' cell phones, so they couldn't even call anyone they knew.

*So what happened? : Upon arriving at the airport, university officials and security company employees took 22 people, excluding one who complained of health problems, on a flight to Uzbekistan that the school had booked in advance and sent them out.

Interests of international students VS interests of universities

*Why were you forced to leave the country? : According to the Ministry of Justice’s ‘Guidelines for visa issuance and stay management for foreign students’, international students at language schools must maintain an account balance of 10 million won or more while staying in the country. If you withdraw even 10 won in the middle, it is a violation of this guideline.

The university’s position is that it preemptively forced international students to leave the country to prevent them from becoming “illegal immigrants.” There was no illegality or coercion in this process.

*Is university a pure heart? : However, if international students leave the country and become illegal immigrants, they will be disadvantaged when the university later recruits international students again, so it appears that they were made to leave the country in advance.

In particular, we cannot help but conclude that the reason the school took this action in advance when none of the international students have yet become illegal immigrants is that it viewed all 22 international students as potential criminals.

Ignoring student management and conveniently forcing them to leave the country?

*Korean society criticizes Hanshin University: Students issued a statement condemning Hanshin University’s absurd actions.

Hanshin University students and others asked, “Do you think it is a fair explanation that the school forced international students to leave the country to prevent them from becoming illegal immigrants?” “We condemn the school authorities who forced international students to leave the country through lies and threats,” they said.

*National Human Rights Commission also begins investigation: It appears that the National Human Rights Commission will soon begin an investigation after receiving a complaint from the husband of a female student who was forcibly deported. Osan Police Station is also investigating the controversy over Hanshin University's forced departure of Uzbekistan students. Many Koreans are angry because they see this incident as a planned and systematic case of forced deportation of international students by the school. Under no circumstances should such an act that violates an individual's fundamental rights occur.
