The Korea Immigration Service urged caution as there was a recent case of attempted voice phishing by sending a text message to foreign residents saying that they were prohibited from leaving the country.
The Korea Immigration Service said through its website on June 27, “There are cases of attempts to voice phishing (telephone fraud) by impersonating the Korea Immigration Service (Immigration Division) of the Ministry of Justice using international outgoing calls. Please be very careful so that no damage cases occur.”
If you look at the case of a text message sent by an international outgoing phone fraud attempt, with the title ‘Notification of Immigration Prohibition’ it says that ‘You are prohibited from leaving the country in accordance with Article 4-2 and Article 2-4 Paragraph 1 of the Immigration Control Act. You can file an objection to the Immigration Division at 050-***-**** or file an administrative appeal within 10 days from the date of receipt of the notice.’
The Korea Immigration Service does not notify departure prohibition in this way, so it is a scam.
In this regard, the Korea Immigration Service ▲ never uses an international phone number when calling a complainant, and does not notify the person of a departure prohibition by text message ▲ Notification of departure prohibition or suspension is notified to the person by post (registered) in accordance with the Immigration Control Act. So we urge you to be careful.
Particularly, do not answer calls from numbers from unknown sources, such as international calls, and do not install apps or click links requested by the other party. This is because there is a risk of being infected with malware when installing an app or clicking a link.
In addition, if you suspect voice phishing, it is recommended to immediately report it to the investigation agency (Police Office ☎112, Prosecutor’s Office ☎1301).
Even if you have received a fraudulent text message or are suspected of being infected with malicious code, it is advisable to contact the ☎118 Consultation Center without an area code (Korea Internet & Security Agency Hacking Spam Personal Information Infringement Report) for more details.
Still, if you want to know if you are really prohibited from leaving the country, foreign residents can check by visiting the nearest immigration office (bring your identification card).
Immigrants who have acquired Korean citizenship can be found on the Hi Korea (www.hikorea.go.kr) website.
When checking with Hi Korea, you must have a joint certificate authentication.
