I am a worker with an E-9 visa. The employment contract for 4 years and 10 months will be expired soon. However, my employer said that he or she can extend the visa for one more year. I also want to work more. But it's been too long since I've been to my hometown, so I want to go back to my home country and rest for a while. Can I go back to my home country to take a break before my visa extension? Or do I have to apply for a visa extension first?

You worked really hard in Korea for 4 years and 10 months. We think the questioner made a great contribution to the Korean economy.

One thing to be clear is that after working 4 years and 10 months, extending the visa by 1 year is not something the employer does. The Korean government has implemented the ‘extension of the foreign worker employment period’ system so that existing workers can work with a visa extension because foreign workers cannot enter the country due to the corona virus.

This system applies to E-9 and H-2 visa workers whose employment period ends between April 13 and December 31.

However, if you extend your visa under this system, you cannot leave the country. Visa will be cancelled. You cannot re-enter. Please take these circumstances into account.
