On December 1st, Gyeonggi Province held its "Gyeonggi Province Weekly Infectious Disease Outbreak Meeting" to discuss the recent surge in influenza cases and preventative measures.

As a result, Gyeonggi Province, in collaboration with the infectious disease response departments of 31 cities and counties, decided to strengthen public awareness of the need for vaccination and infectious disease prevention guidelines, and to encourage vaccination participation, focusing on high-risk groups.

As of November 16th to 22nd, the rate of suspected influenza cases per 1,000 outpatients in Gyeonggi Province was 63.6, nearly seven times higher than the epidemic threshold of 9.1. This means that each doctor treats an average of 63.6 influenza patients.

The incidence rate is particularly high among those aged 7-12 (164.9 cases) and 1-6 (103.0 cases), raising concerns about cluster infections, particularly among school-age children.

Children aged 6 months to 13, pregnant women, and those aged 65 and older are at a high risk of developing severe influenza if infected, and therefore require vaccination. Vaccination is especially important for school-age children who live in groups.

Foreigners residing in Korea who meet the eligibility criteria (children, pregnant women, and seniors 65 and older) are eligible for free vaccination. To receive the vaccine, bring your ID, health insurance card, and other required documents to a medical institution and inquire.

As of November 25th, the vaccination rate for those aged 65 and older in Gyeonggi Province was 76.2% (1.86 million people), and for children, it was 64.0% (890,000 people). Simultaneous vaccination with COVID-19 and influenza vaccines is also strongly recommended for seniors aged 65 and older.

Influenza vaccinations are available nationwide at designated medical institutions and public health centers, regardless of address. Pre-registration is required before visiting. Information on nearby medical institutions is available on the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Immunization Assistant website (nip.kdca.go.kr).

Gyeonggi Province Health Bureau Director Yoo Young-cheol said, “It is a very concerning situation as influenza is spreading earlier than usual and the number of patients is increasing rapidly,” and emphasized, “It is especially important for high-risk groups to get vaccinated as soon as possible to prevent severe symptoms and death.”
