From the second half of 2022, the qualifications for dependents will be significantly strengthened in the qualifications for health insurance premiums.
According to the Health Insurance Corporation, the eligibility requirements for health insurance dependents will be strengthened from November, and the annual combined income will be drastically lowered from the current 34 million won or less to 20 million won or less.
If the combined income of last year exceeds 20 million won per year, they will lose their dependent status from November of this year and will be converted to local applicants.
The combined income includes financial income, business income, wage and salary income, pension income, and other income. Financial income includes interest on deposits, stock dividends, etc. (exclusive of non-taxation and separate taxation).
Such a change in the system cannot but be a big loss for foreign residents, whose health insurance premiums for local applicants are about 130,000 won.
In Korea, where health insurance premiums are levied according to income and wealth, foreigners are charged an average health insurance premium out of the total health insurance premiums paid by Koreans because it cannot verify foreigners home country's assets.
Therefore, if there is a foreign resident whose annual income exceeds 20 million won and has lost the dependent status, they should request the company for them to be able to sign up workplace health insurance. It may be difficult for the company, but it can be a help to inform them that the health insurance premiums they have to pay are very high when they switch to an local applicant.
According to the new standards, dependents must have no business income. If they have a business registration certificate and earn even 1 won in business income after deducting basic deductions and necessary expenses, they will lose their dependent qualifications.
