In Korea, as the school-age population is shrinking, many universities are struggling to fill the quota. Because of this, universities are trying to attract more international students from other countries.

Although the Korean university admissions are widened for international students, it is very important which university to go to.

Some universities are so focused on filling the quota that they run poor curriculum, which causes international students who cannot adjust to school life to drop out.

Kyonggi University, established in 1947, is a prestigious university in the Seoul area. There are two campuses in Seoul and Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, and about 12,000 students are studying at the undergraduate level alone.

Currently, there are about 2000 international students enrolled in Kyonggi University, from the Korean language training program to the graduate school.

In order for international students to enter Kyonggi University, they must have level 3 or higher in the Korean Language Proficiency Test (TOP).

“Kyunggi University is building the best education system and student management system for international students. It has an optimal environment for students from immigrant backgrounds, such as immigrant teenagers living in Korea, to enter and study.” said Min So-young, director of the International Exchange at Kyonggi University.

Kyeonggi University overwhelms other universities

Kyonggi University supports the study and life of international students through the Office of International Exchange. The Office of International Exchange supports international students with basic living such as dormitory admission, immigration report, insurance, overseas training, and multiple degrees. Here, various efforts are being made so that international students can concentrate on their studies.

In 2020, it acquired the education internationalization certification, proving the expansion of attracting excellent international students and the internationalization capabilities of Korean students.

Kyonggi University received excellent evaluations in terms of school dropout rate, language ability, and academic and living support for international students in the Korean government's annual survey on attracting and managing international students.

From the first semester of 2020, the course registration system has been improved to operate an English course registration system exclusively for international students. From 2019, an interview screening has been conducted for all international students to verify their college scholastic ability so that excellent students can enter Kyonggi University.

Director Min So-young said, “The dropout rate of international students at Kyonggi University is less than 6%, which is superior to other universities. It is not just about attracting more international students. We are operating a variety of education and support programs so that international students can be satisfied in all aspects of their studies and daily life.”

3 attractions of Kyonggi University

Then, what is the real reason why Kyonggi University is attractive to international students?

First, it is because of the low tuition and various scholarship programs. Kyonggi University maintains relatively low tuition compared to other universities in the metropolitan area. In addition, it operates a variety of scholarship programs for international students and supports international students to attend college without worrying about tuition. For example, international students will receive a scholarship if their rank is within 50% of rank.

This scholarship increases as the rank increases. Students who achieve excellent grades within 6% of international students, receive a scholarship equivalent to 50% of tuition and 30% of living expenses.

This scholarship increases as the rank increases. International students who achieve excellent grades within 2% of their rank will receive 70% of tuition and 30% of living expenses, and students who achieve excellent grades within 6% of their rank will receive 50% of tuition and 30% of living expenses.

Scholarships are also awarded to freshmen according to their topic skills. If they are level 4 or higher, they will receive a scholarship equivalent to 20% of tuition and 30% of settlement support. If they are level 6, they will receive a scholarship equivalent to 70% of tuition and 30% of settlement support. Even if they do not have a topic, if they pass the admission screening, 30% of the tuition fee is paid as a settlement support.

In addition, special scholarships are provided to students who suffer from diseases or accidents while studying abroad.

Second, it is because of the special academic and life counseling system. Kyonggi University provides counseling through the Office of International Exchange if international students do not register for courses or attend lectures. If there is a problem in studies, the mentoring program in which Koreans participate will guide them so that they can keep up with their studies. It helps solve problems not only in studies but also in daily life through active counseling. Students who are not proficient in Korean are actively supported through an interpreter program.

Third, it is because of various employment support programs. Basically, international students can participate in more than 33 job start-up competency strengthening programs and over 35 outside career employment programs operated by Kyonggi University.

It also operates a specialized employment program for international students only. In 2020, they held a recruitment fair for international students and are operating a non-face-to-face AI interview program so that students who are interviewing for a job in Korea do not face difficulties. In particular, some graduates are hired directly by companies that have signed business agreements.

Yan, a Vietnamese student in the Department of Social Welfare at Kyonggi University, said, “The scholarship system for international students is abundant and the professors are friendly, so it is fun to go to school. It is not easy to study social welfare theory, but I am studying hard to get a job in the social welfare field in Korea.”

Cradle of Global Talent Cultivation

Kyonggi University is making great efforts to nurture global talent and to internationalize the university.

Especially, they are developing and providing online and offline internationalization programs so that students can have a truly global mindset, and are continuously innovating the educational system so that international students can experience the practical educational outcomes of Korea. Furthermore, they are establishing a company-wide student management system, including curricular and non-curricular courses and student counseling, so that the education of international students does not lag behind that of advanced countries.

Director Min So-young said, “Kyunggi University operates an excellent scholarship system that allows more than half of international students to receive scholarships. We will do our best to support international students from any country in the world so that they can study advanced studies of Korea, experience the wider world, and become talented people with global power.”
